BMW has its roots in the period before the First World War German aviation.
Gustav Otto, son of the inventor of the four-stroke internal combustion engine, set up an aircraft factory and training school in 1910. But after persistent problems with the quality of production, his company was bought by a consortium in 1916. The company was known as Bavarian Aircraft Ltd (BFW) and began manufacturing aircraft under license from Albatros Werke. It soon became the largest aircraft manufacturer in Bavaria, but at the end of World War demand collapsed.
Meanwhile, in 1913, a designer Karl Rapp had set up an aircraft engine manufacturing company, but vibration problems with their own engines meant that they moved the production to Austro-Daimler V12 engines under license. A man named Franz Josef Popp was to supervise the production. He managed to convince Karl Rapp, a talented designer from Daimler to deal with Max Friz. Friz quickly developed a new engine and made an impression with investors that Karl Rapp from the economy was plunged 1917th At this point the company name from Rapp Motor Works Ltd. BmbH the Bavarian Motor Works (BMW) has been changed.
But in December 1918 BMW was forced to close, by the government at the end of World War II. However, in less than three months BMW was allowed to reopen, and began designing a new range of engines, although the company was forced to cease production of aircraft engines. At this point, an Austrian financier, Camillo Castiglioni, had the majority of the shares BMW.
In the summer of 1919, BMW started building brake systems under license from Knorr-Bremse AG, and about a year later sold his interest in BMW Castiglioni Knorr-Bremse.
After the sale of its shares in BMW, was Castiglioni, he is interested in purchasing the BFW in 1922. On the back of this he moved back to buy the BMW name and Engineering division of Knorr-Bremse. He was successful, and with the merger of BFW and BMW, under the name BMW, he secured the design and management skills of Max Friz and Franz Josef Popp, as well as valuable engine designs and patents.
BMW will begin production of engine replacement, while Castiglioni has a lucrative contract with the Czechs, the production of BMW engines for use by their military license.
In the 1920s, Russia supplied with BMW aircraft engines and Castiglioni, as well as a majority shareholder, diverted off one brokerage on each transaction on its “private” companies.
Along with military engines, BMW successfully started manufacturing small agricultural machinery and motorcycles, starting with the R 32 in 1923. These formed the basis for the project to a 1925 BMW series vehicle design. Then in 1928 the company expanded into full production car with the purchase of the Eisenach factory made that the Dixi (or Austin Seven produced) under license. The car was known as the BMW 3 / 15 and it was not long before BMW produced its own designs.
However, business itself has Castiglioni and BMW in difficulties. After selling a majority stake in the German bank in 1926 to raise personal funds to his irregular commission payments were properly disclosed. He settled out of court back with a large payment to BMW and stepped down from the board. In 1929 he sold the rest of his German support to the bank together, his finances.
Castiglioni, the affair had cost BMW. The Russian government payments, “the Commission” is known, and demanded compensation. BMW gave a license for the BMW VI engine for free and relations with the Russians came to an end in the early 1930s to produce.
After the successful development of the motorcycle and car businesses in the 1930s, BMW was forced to abandon civilian production by the Nazi party during World War II and in the manufacture of aircraft engines. These included the use of forced labor.
Toward the end of the war, BMW was hit hard by Allied bombing raids and when the war ended, the sites in East Germany were seized by the Russians. Receive in the meantime, while BMW were in the West, they from manufacturing engines for three years and BMW car plans and head designer Fritz Fiedler was banned brought to England to start Bristol Cars. And so it was not until 1948 that the production of BMW motorcycles, and resumed only in 1952, passenger car production has restarted.
The first post-war passenger car models like the 507 and 503, were not very profitable and in 1959 BMW discussed selling the company to Daimler-Benz. This was an unpopular move with the workforce, and luckily Chairman Kurt Golda increased its stake in the company BMW to secure independence.
In the 1960s, the release of more sporty models spelled success for BMW. The BMW 1500 (this is the BMW 700 to follow) to the BMW 1600 and BMW models 1800 and resulted in 1967 two door and convertible models, which became known as the BMW 02 Series. These developments ultimately led to the creation of the famous BMW 3-Series.
The company expanded with the new production facilities and a new headquarters in Munich.
Going in the 1970s replaced the BMW 5 Series sedan, the coupe with the BMW 3 series and a new BMW 7-Series has been replaced have been launched, which BMW sports sedan, three different areas, which continued into the 1990s.
BMW was a global brand in the luxury car in production and sales increased by 18 times. Expands production in Germany and must in all continents, including facilities in Britain, America, South Africa and India. The company has also formed partnerships over time, with Russian and Chinese producers.
In the mid-1990s, BMW bought Rover from British Aerospace. However, the company was fighting a major role for the British brands to find and make a profit. In 2000, the Rover to Phoenix Venture Holdings sold and sold the Land Rover brand to Ford, however, BMW retained the Mini, Triumph and other brands. BMW has successfully re-ignited since gone the Mini brand and also the full use of the Rolls Royce (surely 2003).

The Modern Audi: The period after 1970, particularly years after the Second World War was the emergence of Audi as a brand was really competitive. It was first introduced in the United States in the era after 1970. In 1968, the registration of the Audi brand was 100th It was soon followed by another on behalf of the 80/Fox Audi and Audi 50 in 1974. The Audi 50 was very popular in these days when it was invented, based on the Golf / Polo concept, and it was a great success all over the world because of its unique design and has remained still in his mind.
